This legislation is not just procedural—it is essential. By codifying Governor DeWine’s executive order, SB No. 87 would provide Ohio’s Jewish citizens, including students on our campuses, with clear legal recourse to combat anti-Jewish hate crimes. It affirms that civil rights must be protected vigorously while also ensuring that First Amendment freedoms remain untouched, contrary to the claims of opponents.
Right now, Ohio is one of only thirteen states that has yet to enact such protections. Each day that passes without action leaves our most vulnerable communities exposed. There is no higher priority than guaranteeing the safety and dignity of every Ohioan.
I urge you in the strongest terms to move SB No. 87 out of committee without delay and ensure its passage through both chambers—so that Governor DeWine can sign this vital measure into law before the close of his term.
